Playwrights Anonymous

A playwriting series for all interests, levels, and genres.

Are you a Hawaii-based playwright trying to make it in the industry? Having a hard time finishing that script you started years ago? Feel like the only person interested in writing plays on the island? Guess what, you’re not alone!
Come to Playwrights Anonymous, a new series offered by Aloha Theatre, for local writers of all skill levels to create, develop, and share their stories.
Playwrights attending this crash course will develop and improve fundamentals of script writing, share feedback with fellow writers, and be inspired through “talk story” events with professional Hawaii-based playwrights. Take the lessons learned in Playwrights Anonymous, and apply it by completing and sharing your play!

Ages 16+, This series runs Thursdays, November 8 through December 20th, from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Please bring a water, notebook, writing utensils, and laptop (optional).

About the Facilitator
Dance Aoki has been serving as Secretary of the Aloha Theatre Board of Directors since 2017, is the Development Director of Kona Historical Society, and volunteers for various groups that support the health of Kona’s families. She’s passionate about sustaining organizations that perpetuate the rich cultural life of the Pacific. As a child, Dance grew up admiring her mother, playwright Diane Aoki, and soon followed in her mother’s footsteps. By the time she graduated high school, she staged five short plays as part of the Honolulu Theatre for Youth’s Theatrefest program. In 2000, she was a finalist in the Blank Theatre’s Young Playwrights Competition and runner up in Steven Sondheim’s Young Playwrights Inc. New Play Festival. In 2016, Dance resumed writing for the stage, and excerpts of her plays were selected for staged readings in anticipation of the Festival of the Pacific Arts. Her writing was also performed as part of the 2016 One-Minute Play Festival in Honolulu. She hopes to bring her love of the stage and love of Kona to her services at the Aloha Theatre.
